Wanaka Wastebusters, Sustainable Wanaka, Treble Cone and the good folk of Wanaka have got together to show their support for the 350 campaign. Our challenge for Wanaka is to recycle 50% of Wanakas waste during the next year. Instead of throwing rubbish out, lets look at other options. Can I compost it, make something out of it, give it away, bring it to the re-use shop, recycle it or take it to green waste drop-off? The possibilities are often limited only by our imaginations. Here are some ideas to get you started. With your help, Wanaka can recycle 50%. Then well be halfway to zero waste. Go Wanaka!
 
 

Putrescibles (garden and kitchen waste) release methane and leachate into the landfill. They can easily be composted at home to provide a great tonic for your garden. Traditional composting needs space, muscles and lots of materials to layer up. If you don't have all those things on hand, bokashi buckets or a worm farm might suit you better. Dr. Compost is running another series of his fabulous home composting workshops in Queenstown, the perfect introduction to home composting.
 
 

Great news for visitors to Otago now you can recycle on the road. Just buy a special recycling bag for $1.70, put your clean recycling in it, and drop it off at one of the participating recycling centres throughout Otago. The scheme was launched in Hampden and Palmerston in November, and will be extended to Queenstown, Wanaka and Alexandra over the summer. Most of the tourists we meet want to recycle, now they can do it easily and cheaply.
 
 

Wanaka Wastebusters' Simon Williams is funded by QLDC to provide support for all the schools. He facilitates the Enviroschools program to 6 schools in the district and delivers the Zero Waste Education packages to primary and intermediate age classes.
